Obsidian is book 8 in the New Species series by always amazingly creative Laurann Dohner. I this story Dr. Allison ‘Alli” Baker absconded with a comatose 880 (Obsidian) breaking not just human laws but New Species laws. I get why she did what she did but also do not condone it because she clearly did try every avenue before running off with the New Species.

Obsidian starts out pretty slow and boring but starts to pick up the pace a few chapters in which helps a lot but even with that I think Obsidian will always be my least favorite story in the series. Don’t get me wrong the story is well written and has way fewer edit than what I usually find in New species stories. The thing that got me was the story line itself, because Dr. Allison is a good doctor and yes her heart was in the right place and Obsidian’s attachment was a definite save for the young Dr and all of that was going along bumpily making the story interesting and then the struggling couple is separated for a time. I get why it happened but I had hoped for more about the few months while they were separated instead of just jumping into them reuniting. I guess just like in the movies there have to be cut scenes to make the story a certain size, it could be worse but it wasn’t because the characters were likable and interesting, I just wasn’t crazy about the storyline.

I am still really impressed with how well Laurann Dohner maintains the continuity of her New Species realm. Her attention to the character’s details and personalities from one book to the next has continued to leave me in awe because she never seems to miss a step when addressing other characters from previous books in the series giving us much needed updates on how those characters are progressing in their lives while focusing on the current main characters. New Species is still my all-time favorite series.

Before we get into this review, I want to apologize to all of my readers for taking so long. As some of you know my family and I are going through a very traumatic time and this has impacted every facet of my life including my ability to write and sometimes even reading so getting things done may take time so thank you for your patience and loyalty as I work through everything with my family.

Thanks to the “doctors” of Mercile, Shadow is certain he will never be able to be with a woman for fear he will have flash backs and cause her harm. So, when the gift female he spent a platonic night with in the sports shed, expresses and interest in him, his initial reaction is to refuse. The only problem with refusing is he doesn’t anyone else spend a week alone in a cabin with Beauty either because he knows she wants to experience sex freely shared. Their experiences are similar so if they can just get past the communication gap things should fall into place.

Beauty is considered a gift by her people and as such they protect her from all the males, her friends and fellow gifts are fine with this arrangement but she is tired of being protected and she wants to talk with the males but unlike the other more aggressive females, who kick the males out after sex she wants to experience cuddling and talking. After an innocent night in the sport shed with a male, she is even more curious, especially about Shadow but the only female that hears what she is saying is Breeze. Breeze’s solution is sending Beauty to Reservation for a vacation with her dream guy.

Just when I think I have found my favorite book in the New Species series Laurann Dohner goes and writes another one and making it harder and harder to choose a favorite. Shadow is really sweet and totally steamy all at the same time, you can’t help but feel the sympathy for both Shadow and Beauty as they work their way through their demons and insecurities in order to progress their budding relationship. One of my favorite parts were when Beauty wakes up in the shed and realizes that Shadow is aroused and I would love to share this very sweet moment with you but given the size of the excerpt I would like to share I don’t think it would be appropriate without permission. My other absolute favorite part of Shadow takes place near the end where Beauty makes and epic escape from her would be kidnappers and then is rescued by Shadow. When this couple finally do get into the hot steamy bedroom, you’ll be looking for the cold shower if your man isn’t home, oh my.

Tiger pulled a woman out from under a dog pile during a bar fight to discover she isn’t breather, administering CPR she regains consciousness and he takes her outside for air, where she proceeds to kiss and fondle him. Now he can’t stop thinking about her, not that it matters, he doesn’t do humans and he doesn’t want a mate. Then again he sure doesn’t want any other males to have her so if she is going to be involved with any New Species IT IS GOING TO BE HIM.

Zandy applied for a job with the NSO after being fired for refusing her dick head boss’ request to have sex with him. Her only hope when starting there is to not run into the tall gorgeous new species she had kissed after she had been trampled by heard of wild barbarians during a bar fight. She manages to make it a far as lunch before spotting him and hot damn he still turns her on and to bad she has given up on men because always picks the wrong one.

Poor tiger sure knows how to make a mess of things but hey the poor guy is probably scared shitless of what having a mate means. Poor Zandy, everyone keeps telling her that Tiger doesn’t do humans and with his hot and cold back and forth it is a wonder she doesn’t have whip lash to go with all her bruises from being attacked by crazy people and lonely and horny new species from the wild zone. I am kind of disappointed though that once their relationship came to light that he didn’t get teased more for all the times he harassed his friends when they took mates.

Laurann is very good at writing stories that make want to laugh cry and or punch something and you got all of that with Tiger and so that brings me again the ratings and what I think this book should get for a rating. I think over all This author has a good editing team but they just keep missing enough that it always seems to knock the ratings down by a star or two. Even though I would like to give this book a four-star rating because I do like it very much just not as much as Fury or Justice, which surprises me because through the whole series Tiger has been one my favorite characters and I couldn’t wait for his turn to mate, who knows maybe on a future reading my thought process will change. Sorry, back to the rating, I did find a significant number of errors to reduce the four-star rating to a three-star rating which really sucks with this being better than just an ok book.

Wrath is positive he will never be able to be with a woman again, not after the perverts of Mercile used their masturbation machine to rape him while forcing him to watch naked women play with themselves to steal his sperm to sell. He hasn’t been free long enough to shake those memories and when he meets his Lauren he wants her so bad he can taste it but his fear of hurting her because of his flash back prevents him from claiming her.

While having dinner with her best friend, Lauren receives a call from her boss, ordering her to show a property. She wants to make rent so she goes and what thanks does she get? She gets nabbed by New Species who thinking she is boinking one of her co-workers whom she happens to think is lower than pond scum only nobody believes her right away but she is more than willing to help them capture her scumbag co-worker, especially since is gives her more time to spend with Wrath, the damaged New Species that makes her heart pound and her blood boil with his touch.

Laurann Dohner rocks it out again with Wrath and the word she has created with her New Species series which is my new all-time favorite. Damn the oral sex though not totally graphic was steaming up my tablet so bad I thought it would need to be stuck in the freezer since a cold shower would ruin it. Laurens abduction thought terrifying had some seriously funny moments thanks to her quick wit and smart ass mouth. Of course there is the awesomely amazing best friend Amanda who comes a crossed as desperate but who really just wants a solid loving relationship and I hope she gets it. I really thought it was cool how Shadow would explain things to Lauren when Wrath was too emotional to express himself and then there is the more serious part of this story and that is the repercussion on what happened to Wrath that has him concerned for Laurens safety and watching the struggle he goes through as gets closer to her is sweet and amazing to read.

I want to say for the record that I love this book and will probably read it for a third time at a later date but even though it is a five-star book in my opinion the edits yet again have dropped the rating but thankfully only but one star.

Rebecca ‘Becca’ Oberto’s father works for the NSO doing some top-secret military whatever. She is used to his hush hush work activities after all he was always running off to war. As long as he left her alone to live her life she was fine with it but the day he gives her house to a New Species and orders her to move into the main house with him all bets are off. There is no way in hell she is ever going to live in the same house with ‘daddy’ again, she may love her dad but that so ain’t going to happen. It helps that her new house mate is a hotty with super amazing eyes.

Brawn is curious about humans that work with New Species and agrees to join the task forced that helps rescue his people even though it requires him to live in the human world. Where he soon discovers that he has a house mate and that the said house mate is a human female who seems fascinated by him. He lets her know that he is in no way interest in human females and prefers the company of species females, who like him, prefer rougher sex and that he could hurt her if they tried. Becca is disappointed to learn that Brawn doesn’t do human females but that’s ok she is used to rejection thanks to her late husband. Besides the fight with her dad sort of put a damper on her libido anyway.

Brawn and Becca end up being kidnapped and the only thing keeping the bad guys from putting a bullet through Becca’s head is that fact they think she is Brawns girlfriend. While in captivity Becca and Brawn spend some quality time getting to know each other and she is forced to help him give sperm samples which leads to a rather steamy round of captivity sex later. When rescue comes and they go their separate ways, Becca learns a secret that the New Species want kept quiet.

Brawn isn’t one of my favorite stories of the series but it is certainly worth the time to read and enjoy. I think my favorite part was when Brawn was sniffing on Flame to get Becca’s sent and of course the bedroom scenes gave me some new ideas. I love the progression of the series itself because you see how the dynamic of the group, as a whole, changes as the New Species learns new things about themselves and others through each new attack or interaction. Brawn is well written and does a great job of maintaining the continuity of the characters and the series. As far a ratings go a five-star rating would be well deserved but due to edits the rating will be four-stars.

Yeah, Justice North gets a mate; even though he tries to fight it for what he thinks is the good of his people. He thinks he should mate a New Species woman but he can’t stop thinking about Jesse and when she finally has enough of his antics he won’t let her go.

Jesse Dupree loves her job rescuing New Species females from the clutches of the evil jerks they were given and who cares is she got the job because her dad is a Congressman. After an invitation to a wedding at reservation leads to her being attacked and then rescued by Justice North she see her chance to share her ideas about the future recues of the female. Before they can really talk she is called back to work where a gunshot costs her the job she loves but plants her closer to Justice things can only get better can’t they.

Justice gives so much of himself to his people that I am excited that he gets to have love and happiness to. Although there were times I really thought he deserved getting kicked to the curb. And poor Jesse just could catch a break, at every turn her heart was being broken because he just couldn’t figure it out. They had some epic go rounds that usually seemed to happen after some seriously hot steamy, blow the roof off sex, so by the time they went the separate ways for the night you were sure if you needed a cold shower or a punching bag.

So now that I have raved about this book that yes I have read twice, hey what can I say, I love these books; but I still need to give this one a rating and after counting all the edits I found I am thankfully happy to announce that I am only subtracting one star from the rating due to edits. The Heating though was off the chart so five flames really aren’t enough to cover how hot things got between this couple.

I would really love to give Valiant a five star rating but with the number of edits I found in it that will seriously be reduced but I have read this book three times already and will undoubtedly read it again so that speaks for the story itself but I still hope that Laurann will consider re-editing at sometime in the future. Because I really love the world that Laurann has created with her New Species series. She has created a race of humans that seem larger than life and incorruptible, they are sweet yet very dominant and possessive, it is no wonder Tammy fell in love with the moody and growly Valiant who is very sweet under all that growling and roaring.

The heat rating will hopefully make up for the overall rating as they deserve high marks for being steamy enough to leave you panting with a lighter side to leave you giggling with every roar and scream that everyone can hear.

This time my quotes may get me censored again, but if they do that just means it’s time to create an adult version page for this blog because some quotes should just be shared. With that said there are three quotes that I am really attached to I just couldn’t decide which ones to share so I have decided that all three deserve the spot light. I just love the honesty of all the New Species characters and two of the quotes though related to sex show this the other though also related to sex but for different reasons was just plain cute and funny.

Slade has the hots for the new female Doctor that Justice hired for homeland but he feels like he is cheating because of what he felt for the doctor who treated him when he was in the hospital. When he finds out they are one and the same he could kick himself for screwing up his chances with her. And the worst part is every time he makes any head way in the right direction, he screws it.

I could read Slade over and over again and be a happy woman. It has thrilling rolling SUV rides, a chilling near rape scene that you almost don’t see coming and steamy hot sex scenes that leave panting and wishing it was your turn. Slade will give you everything you need to keep you glued to it. I should know I have three other books I am trying to read and they are feeling very much neglected, shame on me, NOT 🙂 With this being my second or is third time reading this particular book you would think putting it down would be easy, nope didn’t happen and I was nearly late for work for the last two days, try explaining that to your boss “Um gosh, i am sorry, Boss, but the book would not let me put it down, I swear it really wouldn’t.”

Now that I have raved about how much I loved reading Slade it is time to give the down side which is the editing which is actually better than some I still found some typos like ‘this; when it was obvious that it should have been ‘his’ and ‘injures’ which I think should have been ‘injuries’ and the a repeated phrase in one sentence and a missing word but thankfully there were so few that when I counted it wasn’t so bad. Now just so everyone knows I am going to make a change to how I award stars for every five edits I find I will knock off a star in the overall ranking until it is down to one. That being said Slade is a book I will most likely read over and over again so I would usually give it a five-star ranking but with the edits I counted it will only get four.

Favorite Quotes were numerous and hard to choose from but I chose to share one from Slade and one from Moon, I want to also share the last conversation in the book but giving away the end would truly be tacky.

I generally complain about covers that only show the guy or don’t depict what the book is about but when I look at this cover, it is so steamy I am tempted to give it a heat rating instead.

The first time I read this book I couldn’t put it down because I was so eager to find out what would happen next between Fury and Ellie. And as I read it again it was the same the story line just pulled me right in and I lost track of time and space, my husband was a little put out because he had to do all the chores himself, which usually happens when I am ensconced in a great book.. The first bedroom scene was pretty intense and epic with all the emotions swirling through the room at dizzying speeds. I felt bad for Fury and Ellie as Justice misinterpreted things and then I could just see Justice’s face in my mind as he was enlightened into understanding and made me laugh

I really love this series and have re-read every book as a new book comes out. World that Laurann has created in the series seems so descriptively realistic that I can understand why people would ask were New Species are hiding and of course “When will the next book be out?”

The Cover Rating
I love the cover it is hot and I know the books main focus is the man but the woman does play and equal roll in the story line so I kind of wish Ellie was represented on the cover.
